Scholarship Application Essay for a Study Abroad Program

Today I am a very successful student at Albany State University. I am a Presidential Scholarship recipient, holding a 3.6 Grade Point Average and a member of the Velma Fudge Grant Honors Program. As a second semester junior, I am proud to say I have remained on the Dean’s List since I arrived on campus. Aside from my academics, I am very active on campus. As a Social Work major, I work diligently with the Students Social Work Association as an advocate for social policy and justice. Through this organization I have accumulated over three hundred hours of community outreach and volunteerism. In 2013, I served as the organization’s queen, receiving the title Ms. SSWA. More recently I have become a Global Ambassador for the university’s Study Abroad Global Program. Looking at my achievements, I would have never imagined myself as a prosperous college student. For most of my life I had been considered a statistic. My mother gave birth to me out of wedlock with a father I have never met and I am an African American minority who comes from poverty. These two aspects of my life analytically put me at a higher risk to conceive children during my adolescent years and to continue a cycle of poverty. Coming from a low income neighborhood that resided on the border of two local gangs, I believed these types of studies. I thought that my future would be bleak.
